ABOUT THERAPY
What is therapy, and how can it help?
Therapy, also called counseling or psychotherapy, is a structured conversation with a trained professional that helps you understand what you’re going through and build practical ways to handle it. It isn’t just talking about problems. A good therapist uses specific, evidence-based methods, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, to help you notice patterns in your thoughts and behavior, cope with difficult emotions, and work toward changes that last.
People come to therapy for many reasons. Some are dealing with a condition like anxiety or depression. Others are going through a divorce, a loss, a move, a new job, or a season of life that simply feels like too much. You don’t need to be in crisis, or to know exactly what’s wrong, to start mental health counseling in Miami. Many people begin because they want to feel more like themselves again.

WHAT WE HELP WITH
Common reasons people start therapy
Anxiety and panic
Constant worry, racing thoughts, or panic attacks that make everyday situations feel harder than they should.
Depression
Low mood, lost interest in things you used to enjoy, or a heaviness that doesn’t lift on its own.
Trauma and PTSD
The lasting effects of difficult or frightening experiences, including abuse, violence, or loss.
Grief and loss
The death of someone close, the end of a relationship, or another loss that’s hard to move through.
Relationship and couples issues
Conflict, distance, or communication problems with a partner or within your family.
Stress, burnout, and life transitions
Pressure at work or home, exhaustion, or big changes like a move, a new role, or becoming a caregiver.
Self-esteem
A harsh inner voice, feeling not good enough, or a difficult relationship with how you see yourself.
Substance use
Concerns about alcohol or drug use, and the patterns and stress that often come with it.
AMP also treats OCD and insomnia, and our counselors work with survivors of domestic violence. If what you’re dealing with isn’t listed here, call us. We’ll help you figure out whether therapy is the right fit.
How We work
The approaches our therapists use
Every person is different, so there’s no single method that fits everyone. Your therapist will talk with you about which approach makes sense for what you’re working on, and many sessions draw on more than one.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Helps you identify unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors and replace them with ones that serve you better. CBT is one of the most widely studied forms of therapy for anxiety and depression.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
Teaches practical skills for managing intense emotions, getting through moments of distress, and improving relationships.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured therapy used to help people process traumatic memories. EMDR is available with specific members of our team.
Trauma-focused CBT
A version of cognitive behavioral therapy designed for people working through the effects of trauma.
Solution-focused therapy
A goal-centered approach that focuses on what you want to change and builds on what’s already working in your life.
Motivational interviewing
Helps you work through mixed feelings about making a change, so you can move forward on your own terms.
COUPLES COUNSELING
Couples counseling in Miami
When a relationship is under strain, it affects everything else. Couples counseling gives both partners a structured space to communicate, understand each other’s side, and work through conflict with the help of one of our counselors. Call our team to schedule a couples session and ask about in-person and telehealth options.
TERAPIA EN ESPAÑOL
Therapy in Spanish
Several of our counselors provide therapy in Spanish. For many people, talking about feelings in their first language makes a real difference. The words come more easily, and nothing gets lost in translation. If you’d prefer a Spanish-speaking therapist, just let our team know when you call.
Our founder, Dr. Adrian Mesa, wrote about why so many people in Miami’s Latino community wait years to ask for help.
THERAPY AND PSYCHIATRY
Therapy and psychiatric care under one roof
Some people do well with therapy alone. Others do best with therapy and medication together. Because AMP has both counselors and psychiatric nurse practitioners on the same team, your care can be coordinated in one place. If your therapist thinks a medication evaluation might help, they can connect you with one of our psychiatric providers without you having to start over somewhere new.
Our therapy team includes licensed mental health counselors and registered counselor interns working under clinical supervision.
GETTING STARTED
What to expect when you start therapy
Your first appointment is a conversation. Your therapist will ask what brought you in, what you’re hoping will change, and a bit about your history and daily life. Together, you’ll talk about goals and how often to meet. There’s no pressure to share everything at once, and you can ask questions about how therapy works at any point.
Sessions are available in person at our Miami office at 2464 SW 22nd St, on Coral Way, minutes from Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Little Havana, and Brickell, and by secure telehealth for anyone in Florida. We accept more than 40 insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare, and our team verifies your benefits before your first visit so you know what to expect. Self-pay rates are available, along with a sliding scale based on financial need. Appointments are often available the same week.
Common questions about therapy at AMP
Do I need a therapist or a psychiatrist?
A therapist helps you work through thoughts, feelings, and patterns through talk therapy. A psychiatric provider evaluates your symptoms and, when it’s appropriate, prescribes and manages medication. At AMP, psychiatric care is provided by psychiatric nurse practitioners. Many people start with one and add the other later. If you’re not sure where to begin, call us and we’ll help you decide.
What is the difference between a therapist and a psychiatrist?
A therapist provides talk therapy and does not prescribe medication. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who diagnoses mental health conditions and prescribes medication. Psychiatric nurse practitioners, like the psychiatric providers at AMP, also evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe. Read our full guide to the difference between therapy and psychiatry.
Can a therapist prescribe medication?
No. Licensed mental health counselors provide therapy but don’t prescribe medication. At AMP, if medication might help, your therapist can connect you with one of our psychiatric nurse practitioners, who can evaluate you and prescribe when appropriate.
Does insurance cover therapy?
Most insurance plans include some coverage for therapy. If you’re looking for a therapist in Miami who takes your insurance, AMP accepts more than 40 plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare, and our team verifies your benefits before your first appointment. Coverage varies by plan, so we’ll let you know what to expect.
Can I do therapy online?
