I once found myself on an airplane flying from Boston to Miami and it would be a flight I would never forget. It was the first time that I, Dr. Adrian Mesa, experienced a panic episode. I was 36 years old at the time. I had never had a panic episode before, yet here I was sitting on an airplane with all the classic symptoms of a panic attack. 40,000 feet in the air, sitting on the window aisle and the world began to close in on me. I began to experience shortness of breath, a rapid heartbeat, and tunnel vision. I was sweating profusely, and the feeling of impending doom was one that I could not overcome. My vision became tunnel vision and my thoughts raced. Despite using all the techniques that I would often recite to patients; I could not control the rising feeling of anxiety. In fact, I recognized I was experiencing a panic attack and still I could not control it. Why am I sharing such a personal story with you on the company website? I want you to know that panic attacks are NORMAL. I want you to know that they can happen to anyone and at any time. Sometimes, the trigger is one that is obvious. Other times, the source of the panic attack is unknown. Nevertheless, know that panic episodes and panic attacks can be prevented and treated. Using therapeutic techniques and/or medications, lifestyle changes and by identifying triggering events you can live a life free of panic episodes.
